Addition!

This week we have been learning to find the total of two groups of objects by counting all of them. We learned about the sign + for adding and we had a go at writing our own number sentences. We used different manipulatives to find a total such as objects, beads and number lines.
For computing we looked at the RM starting graph programme. We looked at the results of our favourite colours from last week and we inputted this data into the programme. We then got our own class graph. Lots of children had a go at finding their own data on the class such as eye colour, hair colour and favourite fruit and then making their graph on the computer.
We found out about rainbows and how they are formed and we learned the song 'I can sing a Rainbow'. We used instruments to make the sound of the rain. For science we did an experiment with skittles. When we added water we saw beautiful rainbow colours on the plate.
For home learning this week we would like as many of you as possible to complete the Big Bird Watch for the RSPB. It will be interesting to find out which birds you have in your gardens.

Red!

This week we have starting thinking about our topic Colours of the World. Our class focussed on the colour red.
We did some Maths with the Smarties. 'We put the Smarties in the right place. We put them with the right colours.' Isaac. 'We put them in the same colour group.' Matthew. 'We made a chart. 'We counted the numbers and I noticed that brown had the most and purple had the least.' Sam.
We had a vase of red roses in our class room. 'We put some sticky tape down there and we made our own rose.' Stephan. We made observational paintings of roses. 'We painted the roses' Joe.
We read the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood' and we all wrote little books. 'We hung the Little Red Riding Hood books on the wall.' Jasmine.'. When we added white to red 'it made it lighter, it went pink.' Jimmy.
Our home learning for this week is to have a go at making your own chart at home. Maybe you could ask your family what their favourite colour is?

Maths is all around

We have been exploring our new Maths shed outside. 'There was some number spoons.' Matthew. 'They got numbers on them.' Alice. 'We learn about numbers with the number spoons.' Iris. 'We counted them and put them in order.' Jack. 'We had to find small things and big things. There are numbers.' Jimmy. 'We picked up objects on the spoons. We counted them.' Isaac. 'There was some shapes in there and you can count with them and play snap with them.' Maddison. 'There were some numbers that we could count. There were 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 blocks. We counted them.' Orlando. 'There was a clock in there.' Ola.
We read the story of the Gingerbread Man. 'The Gingerbread jumped out of the oven and ran away.' Leila. We all did some writing. 'We put writing in the speech bubbles.' Sam. We had a picture of a fox. Benji wrote 'I want to eat you.'
We all made models with the Sticklebricks and used the Talking Postcards to record what we had made. 'I made a house for the Gingerbread Man.' Harry.
Next week we are starting our topic of Colours of the World by having a week on colour. Our Home Learning is to bring something to school that is red.

Welcome back

It was lovely to see all the children after the break. They have come back to school full of enthusiasm to learn and with so much to say about their holidays.
All the children had a go at writing about their holidays and we were very pleased with the progress they have all made with their writing.
Our topic for this term is 'Colours of the World'. Please look out for the parent letter and topic web in your e-mails. We are looking forward to an exciting term of learning.
